Safety first

Stay off the roof. Wet, icy or hail-covered shingles are slippery, storm-damaged ones can break underfoot, and a fall from a roof is far more dangerous than any leak. If a power line is down, stay well away from it and anything it touches, including fences, gutters, cars and puddles. Treat it as live and call 911 and Xcel Energy. If water is coming through near a light fixture, an outlet or a ceiling fan, switch off that circuit at the panel only if you can reach it safely while standing on a dry floor, and do not touch anything wet. If a ceiling is sagging with water, keep everyone out of the room below it.

What counts as a roofing emergency

Call right away, at any hour, when water is coming into the house, when wind has torn off shingles or a section of roof, when a tree or a large branch has fallen on the house, or when hail has left holes or exposed boards. A leak that will get worse with more rain or melting snow in the forecast is an emergency too. A few missing shingles with no water inside, or a dented gutter, can usually wait for a regular appointment, and we will tell you if that is the case.

Tarping and temporary repairs

The first job is to stop more water from getting in. When it is safe to work, we cover the damaged area with a heavy tarp, fastened to the roof with boards rather than just weighted down, so it holds through wind. For smaller damage, we may seal it with a temporary patch instead. Where a tree is on the roof, the tree service removes it before we cover the hole. Temporary repairs are built to last until the permanent repair, not for years, and we take photos of the damage before we cover it, which helps if you file an insurance claim.

While you wait

Move furniture, rugs and electronics away from the leak and put buckets or towels under the drips. Take photos and video of the damage inside and out, from the ground. Keep receipts for anything you spend to protect the house, since some policies cover them. Do not sign anything from someone who knocks on the door in the middle of the night offering a full roof. You have time to make that decision once the house is dry.

What happens when you call

A person answers, asks what is happening and tells you what to do while you wait. We send the nearest available crew and give you an arrival time on the phone. In lightning, high wind or ice, it may not be safe to climb until the weather passes, and we will say so rather than put a roofer at risk. On site, the crew makes the house as watertight as it can, then gives you a written price for the permanent repair. After-hours rates are higher, and we tell you the rate on the phone before anyone drives out.

Wind took a section of shingles off at night and rain was coming in. They had a tarp on the next morning once the wind dropped and fixed it properly two days later. Wish it had been sooner, but they explained why.

We got ice dams every winter on the north side. Instead of just selling us heat cable, they fixed the attic ventilation and added insulation. No ice dams this year.

Our gutters overflowed every summer storm. They put in larger one-piece gutters with an extra downspout and extensions away from the foundation. The basement has stayed dry since.
